Our 2009 Tournament Season came to an end. The new courts and the excellent play drew large crowds, and the 3 day event was topped off with a delicious barrel chicken potluck, attended by 66 players, spectators and friends.

Pickleball (PB) Board Meeting - 10-13-2009

The meeting was called to order by President Bill MacCullough. Members present Bill MacCullough, Helmut Koehne, Kathy Dillon, Linda Brandelius, Marta Holm, Steve Dalakis, Scott Sutherland, Mike Salli and guest Barbara Dalakis. Absent: Lin Filbin, Len Haubl. Minutes were taken and transcribed by Marta Holm.

A motion was made by Steve to approve the minutes from the previous Board meeting. MSC.

Barbara gave a report on progress of parade/parade committee. All set for the parade. We will have approx. 30 PB members in the parade. Barbara reminded all to wear PB shirts and bring your paddles and medals.

Treasurer- Steve- bank balance is $431.20.

Equipment- Scott- 4 recent paddle sales

Tournaments- Helmut - nothing to report

Social – Kathy was congratulated for a job well done at the anniversary luncheon. Next event will be the Holiday party.

Courts manager/At Large – Linda – nothing to report

Secretary – Marta – asked if court schedules were going to be set up once the new courts opened. Some BOD members felt there weren’t enough courts to do that. We should reserve some time for beginner play. Marta also asked that Bill follow up with Chris about the new bulletin board. It was decided that the PB group as a whole would not send flowers to ill members. Marta reminded the BOD that we should use the Mr. Pickle Sandwich shop again for an event as they are our sponsors.

President – Bill – gave a report on the court status. The fence will be put up this week and courts painted 3 different shades of color.

Bill initiated the new Board process. Current board positions were reviewed to determine if there was still a need for them. We will not fill the Equipment manager position. The Webmaster will be an appointed position. Five PB members will be appointed to the Nominating Committee (NC): two (2) current BOD members (Scott and Helmut) and three (3) members from the general membership. Those three members will not be eligible to run for board positions. Therefore, Bill will advise them when he calls to invite them to be on the NC. Candidates nominated by the NC will be presented at the November general membership meeting. Nominations will also be taken from the floor. If more than one person is interested in a particular BOD position then an election will take place after nominations are made. Should there only be one nomination per position, then the election can be by acclamation. Installation of new officers will be at the Holiday party in December.

We discussed collecting $10.00 annual dues in November for 2010. After approval by membership, the treasurer, Steve Dalaklis, will start collecting 2010 dues until a Membership BOD member is elected at which time that person will take over that duty. If a new group member signs up to join the group after October in any given year, they will pay their $10.00 dues at that time and get a by for the remaining months in that year. A motion was made by Steve to approve the dues process. MSC

Next meeting- Tuesday, October 13, 10:00 AM at Steve’s home. November’s meeting will be on the 3rd at 10:00 AM at Marta’s house. Bill will reserve a room for the November general membership meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill MacCullough. Members present Bill MacCullough, Helmut Koehne, Lin Filbin, Kathy Dillon, Steve Dalakis, Scott Sutherland, Mike Salli and guest Barbara Dalakis. Absent: Linda Brandelius, Marta Holm, Len Haubl. Minutes were taken and transcribed by Kathy Dillon in Marta’s absence.

A motion was made by Steve to approve the revised minutes from the previous Board meeting. MSC.
Barbara gave a report on progress of parade/parade committee. She has a committee meeting on Aug 14th to meet and check on progress of her committee. She reports that there are 40 entries-450 people participating in the 10 year celebration. A committee meeting for LH club participant leaders is to be held on Aug. 28th, Pinky Hordyk will attend in Barbara’s absence.

BOD- reports
Treasurers- no change with bank balance, remains $192.86. Steve reports that Golden West Bank is imposing a fee for minimum balance under $100.00. He will check into this to see if this applies to non-profits. A receipt for $24.66 was paid to Barbara Dalakis for parade supplies.

Social- Lin and Kathy met with catering at Meridians for the Holiday Party, Dec. 7th. We were given a contract for $24.99 per person for food (including tip and taxes). A save the date reminder will be sent out again to remind of date of holiday party. The upcoming 2nd anniversary party/BBQ/potluck date has around 50 people signed up so far. This event will be at the Sports pavilion Aug 22nd, 11-3.

Equipment- Scott- no sales reported due to the closure of the courts.

Tournaments- Helmut presented criteria for ranking players by skill level to categorize for future tournaments. The next tournament to be played Oct 28th-C, Oct 29th-B, Oct 30th-A players.

Courts- Linda absent- Special thanks go out to Linda for contacting Alan @ Johnson Ranch for daily guest play.

Bill reports that he is meeting weekly with a committee to discuss progress of new courts. There are incentives with the contractor to meet the completion in a timely manner and penalties incurred if construction is held up by them. The contractors plan to work on Saturdays. There guesstimate is end of August for completion with old courts available for play before then. There will be down days for safety reasons on certain construction days.

Pickleball (PB) Board Meeting - 7/22/2009

The meeting was called to order by Bill MacCullough. Members present: Bill MacCullough, Helmut Koehne, Linda Brandelius, Lin Filbin, Kathy Dillon, Steve Dalaklis, Marta Holm, Mike Salli, and guest, Barbara Dalaklis. Absent: Scott Sutherland and Len Haubl.

A motion was made by Linda to approve the revised minutes from the previous Board meeting. The motion was moved, seconded and carried (MSC).

Barbara gave a report on the preparations for the 10-year anniversary parade. Mr. Pickle mascot will participate, a banner is being made and players are encouraged to join in the walk. Estimated expenses will be no more than $50.00.

Linda proposed that we discontinue the PB demos on Saturdays for the months of August and September. All agreed that due to the construction of the new PB courts, designated times for new players on Fridays and the introduction to PB on Saturdays will be suspended until further notice. The motion was moved, seconded and carried (MSC). Marta will include this notice in the Compass.

We discussed the SCLH Board’s decision not to provide tennis court #11 for our temporary use. It was cited that it is not cost effective to set up temporary courts for a three-week period, according to the contractor’s estimate of unavailable court time. The PB Board adamantly disagreed with this decision. Lin made a motion that tennis court #11 be converted to two courts during the construction period when our courts are unavailable. The motion was moved, seconded and carried (MSC).

As a fallback to Lin’s motion, Linda made a motion to mitigate costs by using court #11 in the interim for the three weeks +/-, and simply use tape to create one temporary court using the existing tennis net. The motion was moved, seconded and carried (MSC). Bill will contact Chris and let him know that the PB Board does not agree with the SCLH Board’s decision and will propose both of these motions. Bill also recommended that the PB Board members attend the SCLH Board meeting tomorrow morning and if given the opportunity voice our opinion.

We discussed the Code of Conduct that Frank Castellanos drafted. The Board agreed that the conduct of some players is inappropriate. Each PB Board member will review the draft document and bring suggestions for revision to the next Board meeting. Once the document is finalized, it will be incorporated into the Bylaws. A copy of the Code of Conduct will be posted at the courts.

Kathy reserved the Sports Pavilion on August 22. We will celebrate our second PB anniversary with a barrel chicken barbeque. Guests will be asked to bring either a salad or dessert and a non-alcoholic beverage of their choice. December 7th is the date for our Christmas party. The Orchard ballroom has been reserved. A rock and roll band will provide music. Kathy and Lin will meet with the Meridian caterers today to discuss the menu and costs.

Marta asked when the new Board election process will start. The process will begin in September.

Mike has updated the website.

Steve reported we have $190.86 in our bank account. He also submitted the required report to the Community Association.

Helmut sold some paddles and balls in Scott’s absence. We have had some activity with Ladder Play. He will promote it further after the new courts are completed. Helmut will recruit for volunteers to play during the 10-year anniversary PB demo September 12-15th. The Board agreed to have a tournament on October 28-30. It will be levels A, B, C, double elimination, blind draw and 8 teams at each level. Players will sign up and choose what level they want to compete in. There will be a $5.00 non-refundable fee due at sign-up. Lin volunteered to collect the fee.

Bill updated the Board on the new court activity in addition to what was already discussed. Peter Gilbert wants a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new courts. The SCLH association donated a PB set up at the old firehouse building in town at 391 H Street for the PAL (Police Athletic League) group. Chris O’Keefe set up the small court outside adjacent to the building. Bill encouraged all PB Board members to attend the PB demo on Friday, July 24 at 3:00 PM at the site.

The next meeting will be held at Kathy’s home on August 12, at 10:00 AM.

Pickleball (PB) Board Meeting - 5/12/2009

Members present: Bill MacCullough, Helmut Koehne, Scott Sutherland, Linda Brandelius, Mike Salli, Kathy Dillon, and Steve Dalaklis. Absent: Lin Filbin. Frank Castellanos, member at large absent. Marta arrived late.

Meeting was called to order and last month’s meeting minutes were not approved. The minutes will be revised to add “motion made, moved, second and carried (MSC) as the term to be used when motions are made and passed. The names of all members present will also be listed on the minutes.

Steve – our bank account is up to date. The motion was made to start collecting dues January 1, 2010 (MSC).

Scott – Sales of paddles are brisk. Scott sold at least 16 paddles in the last month.

Linda – Saturday Demo Day is still going strong. The courts will be available on Fridays beginning May 22, from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. for beginner players. We will hold off on rotation play for now due to lacking interest. Marta will note this in the Compass input.

Kathy – Cinco de Mayo potluck was a success. Kathy will reserve the Sports Pavilion for our second annual BBQ on Saturday, August 22. She will work with Lin to start planning for our Holiday party.

Mike – Our website is up to date. Mike asked for pictures of our last tournament. Linda will send Mike some pictures.

Helmut – Due to the construction schedule for the new pickleball courts, we will not plan an August tournament.

Marta – will update the group roster and send out to all members. She will remove all non-members from the email distributions and only cc: SCLH management when appropriate. Marta has reserved a table for the PB group at the 10th anniversary Group Demo at the Orchard.

Bill – gave an update on the court status. Barbara Dalaklis is coordinating PB's entry in the Lincoln Hills 10th Anniversary Parade. She is in the process of forming a committee. Mr. Pickle's Sandwich Shop has been contacted about having their costumed person be our mascot. Confirmation is pending.

A motion was made to close the meeting (MSC).
The next meeting will be held at Steve Dalaklis’ home on June 9th at 3:00 p.m.

Revised Pickleball (PB) Board Meeting - 4/14/09

Members absent: Non-board members present: Barbara Dalaklis and Kelly. Frank Castellanos, member at large absent.

Meeting was called to order and the March Board meeting minutes were approved. Members were reminded to raise their hand if they wished to speak.

Note: We will post future board meeting dates/time/location on the Pickleball webpage.

Steve – We have $356.83 in our account. The account has been set up at Golden 1 Credit Union.

Scott – The price of paddles has increased. Apike paddles are not legal. Scott will send out a notice about the Apike paddles and post something on the PB bulletin board. The motion was made to follow all USAPA rules for all play and equipment. The motion was moved, second and carried (MSC).

Linda – continues to take the signup sheets to the Wave front desk. We need more volunteers for the Demo day on Saturdays.

Kathy – We will have an informal potluck social on May 5th at 5:00 p.m. to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Plans will be made for our second anniversary celebration on August 20th.

Mike – Our website is up to date. Mike made the motion to approve the Pickleball Bylaws; a second motion was made and all approved. Mike will present our Bylaws to Janine Balcombe.

Helmut – 32 people played at our last tournament. Over 200 people signed the attendance roster that day. Our next tournament date is to be determined. If anyone has ideas for tournaments let Helmut know.

Marta – reminded everyone to give her names, phone number and email addresses of new members. Note: this happened after the meeting: Marta contacted Corinne Nelson to let her know that PB is interested in participating in the Demo Day on September 10 as part of the 10-year Lincoln Hills anniversary. The Demo Day at the Orchard patio area will be for four days but PB will only participate for one day. It will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Marta will ask for volunteers to represent PB at our designated table.

Bill – gave an update on the court status. No one on our board was in favor of having temporary PB courts set up at the Wave parking lot. Bill will advise Peter Gilbert that our board is not satisfied with this plan. The motion was made to convert one tennis court to two designated PB courts during construction phase for the exclusive use of PB play with PB markings only. Motion was MSC'd.

Barbara Dalaklis will be the coordinator if any PB member is interested in participating in the parade for the Lincoln Hills 10th year anniversary in September. Applications need to be submitted by July 13.

Kelly will etch our group name on the new paddles that the group purchased.

The next meeting will be held at Bill MacCullough’s home on May 12th at 3:00 p.m.

Pickleball Meeting Minutes 3/24/2009

Board members Lin Filbin, Frank Castellano and Len Hauble were absent.

The meeting was held on March 24, at 1:00 pm in the Oak Room at the Orchard Creek Lodge.

Bill MacCullough called the meeting to order and the previous meeting minutes were approved.

Helmut Koehne – our first tournament of the year is this week. He still needs one sub. Referees will use score cards and call illegal serves, foot faults and kitchen play.

Scott Sutherland – anyone interested in purchasing new paddles please refer to Scott. The six paddles that were in the PB cabinet at the Sports Pavilion are missing. Anyone wanting to play PB and in need of a paddle will have to check out the key at the Wave and get the wooden paddles that are locked in the closet at the Sports Pavilion.

Linda Brandelius – Someone keeps posting a copy of our roster in the PB cabinet. Please don’t post it because of the sensitivity of email addresses listed on the document. Linda cleaned out the closet and noticed that only one sun canopy is in there. Bill will check with Chris to see if the other was removed to have it repaired.

Beginners Play will start Saturday, April 18, 2009 on one court. This is not a lesson but a demonstration of how PB is played dedicated to beginners. Volunteers are needed to show up on any Saturday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. to demo the game. A schedule will be posted in the PB cabinet if any seasoned players are interested in volunteering. Please remember to check out the key at the Wave to access the closet and bring out the wooden paddles.

We will try Rotation Play on a trial basis for one month. It will be played on the back court on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. beginning Thursday, April 2nd. Four people will play; two winners will stay on the court and split sides. Winners can only play two games. This is to help players become more competitive and not for “good” players only to play. The PB board will evaluate Rotation Play at the end of April.

Steve Dalaklis – is in the process of obtaining a cabinet and key for our equipment. (See below regarding Treasurer.)

Mike Salli – the website is updated. Christmas party pictures are now on the website. The Ladder Play standings are also on the website. http://lhpickleball.blogspot.com/

Marta Holm – please give her the names, email addresses and phone numbers of new members so that she can include them in the email distributions and the PB roster.

Bill MacCullough – Aileen Niver resigned as the lead Social Chair. Lin Filbin will continue as co-chair but due to her schedule she cannot take on the lead. Marta nominated Kathy Dillon, a motion was made to approve the nomination and a second motion was made. Kathy agreed to take on the role as lead Social Chair. Kathy Adams, Sue Jonas and Pinky Hordyk volunteered to help with any social activities. Snacks will be available on the first day of the tournament.

Scott Sutherland, Steve Dalaklis and Mike Salli established the PB Bylaws. The PB Board made many changes to the document and presented it to the PB group members at today’s meeting as a final document. Mike Salli made a motion to approve the document and Steve Dalaklis made the second motion. David Conner made a motion to have the PB Board finalize any future revisions.

As the new Treasurer, Steve Dalaklis visited several banks to inquire about an account for the PB group. Now that the Bylaws are finalized he will be able to open an account. Steve made the motion to have Bill, Steve and Marta as signatories on the account and all present agreed. If anyone needs to be reimbursed for any PB group-related expenses please submit your receipt to Steve.

Bill, Aileen Niver and Audrey Morse are now certified for AED/CPR. Bill thanked them for attending the class. They will be reimbursed the $35.00 registration fee. Len Haubl, MaryAnne Turner, and Manuel Pick are also AED certified.

In Frank Castellano’s absence, Bill updated everyone on the new court status. The Lincoln Hills Board of Directors (BOD) met with the Property Committee to develop information on various potential sites for new courts. The BOD will meet again to go over the findings. Bill inquired about resurfacing our current courts. It can’t be done because they would have to re-ground (or re-grind??) the surface. All Sun City Lincoln Hills (SCLH) projects are now prioritized. David Conner will invite the BOD to come out and watch our tournament this week.

Bill asked if group members wanted to participate in the SCLH 10-year anniversary celebration and maybe give a PB demo. We need to let the anniversary committee know by July 13th if we are interested. Helmut will organize the PB demo. Marta volunteered to organize something for the PB table at the Fun Fair. Barbara Dalaklis will inform us on parade activities.

Bill opened up the meeting for questions. He asked if we wanted to have meetings on a regular basis or as needed. The majority agreed to have meetings as needed and at 1:00 p.m.

A nominating committee for new PB Board members will be formed in October, 2009 and elections will be held in December, 2009.

A motion was made to close the meeting.

Pickleball Meeting Minutes 7/31/2008

Board member Lin Filbin was absent.
The meeting was held on July 31, 2008 at 4:00 pm in the Heights Room at the Orchard Creek Lodge.
Bill MacCullough called the meeting to order and the previous meeting minutes were approved.
Marta Holm – announced that orange cards are available for new members to write their name, phone number and email address on so that they can be added to the email distribution and roster. The cards are in the blue box with the equipment at the PB court.
Richard Holm – court set up schedule for August is complete. Volunteers are still needed to complete the month of September. If volunteers can’t fulfill their duty for all 4 days of the month, volunteering for one or two days is helpful. Richard also announced that he is resigning from his position on the board. Steve Dalaklis has accepted the offer to resume the responsibility as Court Manager.
Aileen Niver – Aileen and Lin Filbin are planning the PB Christmas party. It will be held at Kilaga Springs on December 10th. Tickets will be $25.00. They are also planning an Ice Cream social.
Linda Brandelius – The new shirts are in. Linda announced that 130 people were trained in a short time. The noon training sessions will no longer be available. Linda thanked all those who volunteered their time to train new members. New members will now be worked in for training as they arrive at the courts and not be scheduled for training as before. Some current members are requesting advanced training. We should see if someone like Alan or Lorraine Christensen is available to give lessons.
Helmut Koehne – Ladder play has been expanded to include A, B & C levels. If you would like to be added to the ladder play, find a partner, contact Helmut, schedule a challenge play and give Helmut the final score. The tournament sign-up is full. The format will be announced the morning of the tournament. Only first place awards will be given. The tournament will begin at 8:00 a.m. on August 19th.
Mike Salli – the website is updated. Mike inserted a link to the Good Morning America episode on Pickleball.
Scott Sutherland – complimented Kelly for providing the new white board for game play.
Katie Didion – the 1st-anniversary luncheon is scheduled for August 20th at 12:00 p.m. sharp. The cost is $9.00 per person and the deadline to sign up is August 15th. Leave your checks made out to Katie with anyone on the PB court.
Bill MacCullough – The Good Morning America filming process was a fun experience.
Bill welcomed Len and LaVerne back. It’s good to see Len recovering so well and hope to see him back on the courts soon.
Finance and Property approved the Engineering contract for the new court drawing/concept. The plan is for four new courts to be laid out with lights and appropriate amenities and seating arrangements. Bill is hoping the designers will talk to PB members to see what amenities we would like such as a 4-foot fence between courts. A member asked about the possibility of a covered sunshade over the courts. The two existing temporary courts will remain as overflow so we possibly could have six courts. Chris O’Keefe told Bill about a possible netting system but didn’t go into details with Bill.
Only 4-5 members have had somewhat current training in CPR. Bill would like to see more members trained and certified to use the defibrillator. CPR classes are frequently offered at Lincoln Hills. Dates and times are published in the Compass.
The Lincoln Hills Group Expo will be held on September 26th. Bill asked if members were interested in participating in this event. The following members volunteered to spend time at the PB table to answer any questions regarding PB and how it’s played:
Lyle Fay, Len and LaVerne Haubl, Marty Rubin, Marta Holm, Aileen Niver, Katie Didion, Pinky and Dennis Hordyk and David Conner. Katie volunteered to take the lead and coordinate the PB table schedule.
Bill opened up the meeting for questions:
Is it still necessary to sign in when we play PB? Yes, the Association is still looking at the daily numbers of players. Also, Bill reminded us we are signing a waiver when we sign in. In the future, we’ll sign a once-a-year waiver.
Will there be a Johnson Ranch challenge? Yes, it is still being planned along with possibly challenging a Meadow Vista group.
When we get our new courts we should schedule a big celebration and challenge.
Will the broken sunshade be replaced? Yes, the Association is aware that it needs to be repaired or replaced.
We should think of some names for our new "stadium."
Audrey reminded everyone that there will be a big tennis tournament this coming Saturday along with a huge event at the Sports Pavilion. No parking will be available in the Pavilion parking lot.
The next meeting will be held after we hear what the Engineering study results are.

March 27, 2008

All board members present.

The meeting was held on March 27, 2008 at 4:00 pm in the Presentation Theater at the Kilaga Springs Lodge.

Bill MacCullough called the meeting to order and announced that we are now an official club at Sun City Lincoln Hills (SCLH). Previous meeting minutes were approved.

Bill also announced that both Katie Didion and Aileen Niver resigned their posts as social directors. He asked if anyone was interested in taking over as the social director responsible for all social events. Lin Filbin said she would like to talk to Bill about volunteering for this position. [Note: since this meeting Aileen has decided to remain as social director and Lin Filbin will assist her.]

Social activities that are coming up:

- Anniversary celebration on August 20th – Greg and Katie Didion will barbeque tri-tips

Helmut Koehne – We have 13 active teams on Ladder Play with 2-3 teams on the inactive list due to injuries or traveling. We will have a self-ranking tournament on May 30-31, 2008. Helmut will send out more information later. Logos are still available for sale. Copies of the DVD that Elliott Holden created are for sale at $5.00 each.

Marta Holm – will put a copy of the roster in the blue box with other PB equipment.

Richard Holm – Mr. Pickle Deli is now our sponsor and donated 60 t-shirts with their logo on the front and our logo on the back. There weren’t enough to distribute to all members but you will be able to purchase one. The cost will be around $8.00. If you are interested in purchasing one please contact Richard. Please patronize Mr. Pickle Deli; they very graciously donated the shirts and our patronage is important to them. The owners Pam and Phil Lopez also asked that we vote for them on the KCRA Best of A-list. You can visit the site at www.kcra.com/alist.

Richard still needs a volunteer to set up the courts on Saturdays for the month of May. Also, please note that we must clear the court area on Tuesdays from 11:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. for maintenance. The landscapers will not bring their equipment down if they see anyone on the court at noon. They will also report back to their supervisors and Bill MacCullough will get a warning letter from the Association. So please cooperate by simply moving your chairs and equipment to the Sports Pavilion at 11:45 a.m.

Linda Brandelius – A schedule for ladder play and training is now available in a binder. You’ll find the binder with the equipment at the court and can sign up to reserve a court for ladder play or for training. Training hours are now from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Thursdays through Saturdays. If you see new people at the courts welcome them and talk to them about training.

Scott Sutherland – Paddle sales are brisk. A company in San Diego sells PB visors, bags, and caps. Scott has information if you wish to purchase any of these items.

Mike Salli – The web site is updated. There is now a separate photo page and Mike has also included a short version of the tournament video. There is also a link to Mr. Pickle Deli with a menu and phone number, and the schedule for court set up. Helmut will also post names of members who would like a partner for Ladder Play.

Bill MacCullough – Chris O’Keefe is obtaining bids for new PB courts. We are hoping for four new courts. Lights will be included in the plan along with a 4’ fence between courts so that the ball doesn’t leave the court. Seating and bleachers are not in the plan at this point. We’re hoping they will put in benches and shade canopies of some sort similar to what is at the Bocce court.

Johnson Ranch would like a challenge play. They will host the event, more details later.

Bill will look into getting defibrillator and CPR training for members. Does anyone know someone who can train and certify us?

A write up about our group becoming a permanent, official PB group at Sun City Lincoln Hills will be in the May issue of the Compass.

Bill asked that members not discriminate and choose who they want to play with on the PB court. It’s not fair if someone is waiting to play and a more experienced player moves in before them so that they can play a more challenging game with other more experienced players. Try and make new people feel welcomed by playing with them even if they aren’t experienced players.

The next membership meeting will be held on July 31, 2008 at the Orchard Creek Lodge.

I also like to thank Aileen for a wonderful luncheon spread that tasted delicious and was plentiful. The flowers on each table gave it a special effect, thanks to Sandy.
Because of the exceptional group of people in our PB-club I am willing and ready to plan the next tournament.

Pickleball (PB) Meeting Minutes
January 24, 2008

The meeting was held on January 24, 2008 at 5:00 pm in the theater at the Kilaga Lodge.

Bill MacCullough called the meeting to order. Previous meeting minutes were approved.

Aileen Niver and Katie Didion reported on social events. We are able to reserve the Sports Pavilion or any party room at either lodge. A deposit will be required. Aileen and Katie are planning barbeques, ice cream socials, holiday parties and any events that members might be interested in. Membership dues were discussed and consensus was to keep it simple and simply "pass the hat" when funds are needed.

Helmut Koehne presented several types of tournament play. Voted-upon results will be published at the next meeting. Helmut also designed several logo designs for t-shirts. Members would also like ball caps and sun visors.

Richard Holm asked for more volunteers to set up courts. They simply need to check out the key at the Wave. If equipment is too heavy for one person, someone will eventually show up at the court to help set up. The key will have to be returned to the Wave at the end of the day.

Linda Brandelius announced that training will be available between 12:00 – 2:00 pm on play days for newcomers. The "Welcome to Pickleball" flyers that Steve Dalaklis created will be available at the courts to handout to newcomers.

Mike Salli displayed our official website. He would like more pictures of PB players or events for the website.

Bill MacCullough reminded everyone about the use of appropriate language on the court.

February 20, 2008 will mark the end of the six-month pilot program for PB. Bill will give a report to the Sports Advisory Committee (SAC) at their next meeting, February 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the Orchard’s Heights Room. Please attend the meeting to show your support.
Marty Rubin recommended that we ask the SAC to expand the existing courts. If we ask for new courts at another site the funds would not be submitted for approval until 2009. The plan is to ask that the basketball key be moved, add more concrete to expand the courts and move the bench. With the loss of the two big trees that we lost in the last storm we have no shade. We will at least need two canopies to protect us from the hot sun in the summer as we’re waiting for an available court. Parking is also an issue and this will need to be resolved. Someone asked if they could also provide short nets between the courts to prevent balls from going into other courts. We need a strong force at this meeting so please try to attend. We know that funds were readily available to update the bocce courts so that must be a good indicator that there could be funds for PB.

Scott Sutherland has paddles for sale. He will have them available on game days.

Marta Holm will update the PB roster and send it to all members.

Our next meeting will be either February 28, or February 27, depending on availability of a meeting room. After the March meeting we will decide if we need to continue meeting monthly or every other month.

Pickleball Meeting Minutes November 29, 2007

The first "official" Pickleball (PB) meeting was held on November 29, 2007 at 5:00 pm in the Art Room at the Orchard Lodge. 76 were in attendance.

Bill MacCullough chaired the meeting and began with asking for nominations or self-nominations for board members. The following are the results:

An application has been filed to make PB an official organizational committee.

The question was asked whether we should meet on a monthly or quarterly basis. Consensus was for meeting monthly for now with the option of changing to quarterly later on in the year.

Dues will not be collected. If funds are needed we will collect from all PB members.

The PB Mission Statement was reviewed. All seemed to be satisfied with the statement.

The topic of what to post on the website was discussed. Members came up with the following:

Where to order paddles
PB rules
Members’ names, email addresses, and phone numbers. Lots of discussion on this topic. There was some hesitancy about posting email addresses and having members abuse the system by sending jokes, etc. It was suggested that the secretary send a list of phone numbers to everyone rather than advertise names, phone numbers, etc. on the web. The PB board members will meet to discuss the web site.

Someone suggested that we have training available for those newcomers interested in playing PB. Bill asked for volunteers and the following volunteered:

Not everyone received a copy of the great training CD that Alan Christiansen created. Can we get more copies from Alan?

Bill emphasized how important it is that we remind newcomers that they must wear good court/tennis shoes to prevent them from falling or slipping. They should also be able to move easily and limber up before playing. Of course, this isn’t something we can test them on before playing but it is something we can include in the monthly Compass. Bill also reminded everyone that when we sign the Sign-In Sheet we are waiving our rights to hold Sun City Lincoln Hills responsible for any injuries incurred while playing on the PB court. We need to make sure we read the statement at the top of the Sign-In sheet.

Bill gave an update on where we are with the action to get a new, permanent court. Bill talked to Chris O’Keefe. There are several options that are possibilities: the parking lot at the Orchard where the parking lot sale is held; the grassy volleyball site by the Pavilion; or expand the area where the PB courts currently are located. Chris is getting bids for two to four courts. He will submit an initial presentation to the Sports Advisory Committee, then to the property and finance committees. Bill hopes to hear something from them within a month or two. Marty Rubin informed Bill that the submittal must be approved and budgeted by the Capital Improvement committee no later than July 2008 in order for it to be built by mid-2009.

Someone suggested that the plans include short nets between courts so that games aren’t interrupted with balls coming in from other courts. Courts should also be near restrooms and a social area. We get good visibility where the courts are now which brings in more newcomers.

The question was asked whether we should consider changing the hours during the winter to 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. rather than the current 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Consensus was to change it.

Someone asked why we can’t keep the PB nets up all the time. Bill replied that the agreement with the Sun City Lincoln Hills Association was to only put them up as scheduled so that the Basketball court could be available to those interested in playing basketball. Marty stated that if we can prove to the Association that the Basketball court is not being used, they would probably consider allowing us to keep the PB courts up all the time. Bill will check with Abby at the Wave. Bill will also ask the Sports Advisory Committee if we can use the backboard that is used by the tennis players to practice PB.

Bill proposed that future meetings be held on a Thursday at 5:00 p.m. either the 3rd or 4th Thursday of the month. Bill will check the availability of a meeting room.

Bill asked if there were any other items to be discussed. Someone recommended that the bushes at our current PB site be cut back or removed. The sprinklers are also a problem soaking the perimeter of the courts. Bill asked that we notify Chris O’Keefe when we see problems with the sprinklers.

The next PB Board meeting will be on January 10, 2008 at Bill’s home. Time of the meeting is to be determined at a later date.

Bill was recognized by all present for all his efforts in bringing PB to Lincoln Hills!

January Membership Meeting

Happy New Year, Pickleballers,

Our next membership meeting will be Jan. 24, 5-6pm, in Presentation Hall, Kilaga Springs clubhouse.

It is important that we have the same turn out as we had at our first meeting. In addition to what you want to discuss, we will discuss the use of our new Instruction Team, our web site, our Tournament program, the status of our group application, and most importantly, since a permanent court location is scheduled to be presented by management in Feb, a permanent court location game plan. A game plan is important so we can prudently support the court location when the management recommendations are made.

We need your continued support. The "powers that be" were impressed by our turnout last month - 78 P/Bers. These continued numbers are important to maintain since we are making a group application and are pushing for permanent courts.

I will be emailing an agenda for the meeting. See you on the 24th.

Pickleball First Meeting

The first P/B group meeting was a humongous success, with 78 p/bers in attendance. We took some important first steps. We elected the steering committee officers, approved the mission statement, went forward with a website (it's up), established an instruction team, and much more. If you were not there, you missed a great meeting, as meetings go.

I'll give you a brief recap:

A training/instruction team was established to assist new players and those who want to improve their game. The team is comprised of:

I will be contacting them to determine how to use the team and how to contact them. We will have some info on the website also.

If you haven't heard, the group decided to institute winter hours. The courts are now available 9 am to 4 pm.

Our webmaster Mike Salli has created our website lhpickleball.blogspot.com. Nothing on it yet other than our mission statement. Mike has told me he needs input, dates, articles, pictures etc. Great job, Mike, and quick too. I'll be contacting Mike accordingly.

Regarding dues, it was decided for now not to collect dues. If we need funds, we can "pass the hat".

A new roster was created at the meeting, and as long as it is used only for P/B purposes, we will be figuring out a way to get it to you.

We discussed the importance of stretching and warming up before play, and also to wear correct shoes for court play. It's really important that newcomers are wearing good shoes and that they have good lateral movement. New players don't realize how much movement there is in the game.

Chris O'Keefe, facilities manager, will be making a site recommendation to the Sports Advisory Committee on February 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., room to be determined. The committee will discuss the proposals and will in turn make its proposal to the Properties Committee, which in turn will make a recommendation to the Board. So, needless to say it's our opportunity to make our feelings known.

Also, since our six-month trial period will end Feb. 20th, I will be making a report to the committee that will include a request to make P/B a permanent activity and also request a permanent site. The committee will also be discussing the use of the backboard in the tennis area for practice. The Feb. 7th meeting will be an important date for P/B and a real opportunity to show our support. More later on this subject. Stay tuned.

The group agreed that a standing meeting would be held at 5:00 p.m., on the 3rd or 4th Thursday of the month. I will be checking on the availability of a room and advise.

The next P/B board meeting will be on January 10, 2008, at my home. Time to be determined.

I will be submitting our application to be recognized as an association group. It will take time for them to approve.

A lot has been happening, and it's just the beginning, and you all are part of it.

Your support has been great and has gotten us to where we are now.
