LINCOLN HILLS PICKLEBALL NOTICES

PICKLEBALL GENERAL MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH AT 1PM IN THE KS PRESENTATION HALL.
ALL COME!

Pickleball First Meeting

The first P/B group meeting was a humongous success, with 78 p/bers in attendance. We took some important first steps. We elected the steering committee officers, approved the mission statement, went forward with a website (it's up), established an instruction team, and much more. If you were not there, you missed a great meeting, as meetings go.

I'll give you a brief recap:
Your committee board members are as follows;

President Bill MacCullough
Vice president/Court mgr. Richard Holm
Secretary/Treasurer Marta Holm
Tournament Director Helmut Koehne
Equipment Manager Scott Sutherland
Social Chairs Katie Didion/Aileen Niver
Web Master Mike Salli
Members at Large Linda Brandelius/Leonard Haubl

A training/instruction team was established to assist new players and those who want to improve their game. The team is comprised of:

Linda Brandelius, Susan Peterson, Helmut Koehne, Linda Rush, Steve Dalaklis, Richard, Holm, and Katie Didion

I will be contacting them to determine how to use the team and how to contact them. We will have some info on the website also.

If you haven't heard, the group decided to institute winter hours. The courts are now available 9 am to 4 pm.

Our webmaster Mike Salli has created our website lhpickleball.blogspot.com. Nothing on it yet other than our mission statement. Mike has told me he needs input, dates, articles, pictures etc. Great job, Mike, and quick too. I'll be contacting Mike accordingly.

Regarding dues, it was decided for now not to collect dues. If we need funds, we can "pass the hat".

A new roster was created at the meeting, and as long as it is used only for P/B purposes, we will be figuring out a way to get it to you.

We discussed the importance of stretching and warming up before play, and also to wear correct shoes for court play. It's really important that newcomers are wearing good shoes and that they have good lateral movement. New players don't realize how much movement there is in the game.

Chris O'Keefe, facilities manager, will be making a site recommendation to the Sports Advisory Committee on February 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., room to be determined. The committee will discuss the proposals and will in turn make its proposal to the Properties Committee, which in turn will make a recommendation to the Board. So, needless to say it's our opportunity to make our feelings known.

Also, since our six-month trial period will end Feb. 20th, I will be making a report to the committee that will include a request to make P/B a permanent activity and also request a permanent site. The committee will also be discussing the use of the backboard in the tennis area for practice. The Feb. 7th meeting will be an important date for P/B and a real opportunity to show our support. More later on this subject. Stay tuned.

The group agreed that a standing meeting would be held at 5:00 p.m., on the 3rd or 4th Thursday of the month. I will be checking on the availability of a room and advise.

The next P/B board meeting will be on January 10, 2008, at my home. Time to be determined.

I will be submitting our application to be recognized as an association group. It will take time for them to approve.

A lot has been happening, and it's just the beginning, and you all are part of it.

Your support has been great and has gotten us to where we are now.

If you have any suggestions regarding the above subjects, please contact me. I will be updating you.

Happy Holidays,
Bill MacCullough, the Pickleball Guy.

Pick, Pick, Pickleball Rocks

While playing water volleyball one hot August day
Richard told everyone that pickleball is here to stay

We can thank Bill for starting all of this marvelous fun
He wanted pickleball for Lincoln Hills and that, he has done

I finally tried the game and loved it from the beginning
Pickleball is so much fun, but no one knows who’s winning

Sometimes we forget the score but we don’t really care
Senior moments creep in during the game, but it is a cross we all must bear

"Pick, Pick, Pickleball Rocks" is the chant that we all cheer
We yell this out at Chili’s as we salute each new beer

Helmut is the man of the hour for all our tournament play
He loves the phone calls he receives telling him "But I can’t play that day"

Our first pickleball tournament turned out to be a blast
With Cal and Carole winning all the trophies and the cash

Mona showed up on the courts with a problem with her pants
All the on-lookers had to raise their arms to do the chicken dance

Kelly is in his green chair watching people win and lose
He thinks he should play pickleball in his flipflops instead of shoes

When Frankie serves the ball and it goes above his waist
He pulls up his belt up to his armpits to compensate

On these hot spring days, we sit in our chairs under the trees
And dream of margaritas as we wait for the cooling breeze

We had two new canopies to set up for shade in hot weather
But it took 15 people with engineering degrees to get it together

When Manual plays pickleball, Oh, what a great sight
Just think what he could do with a paddle made of graphite

With Greg and Katie playing pickleball on the money
You can always hear them saying, "Good job, honey"

Tom Gatti plays pickleball and really goes to town
With his favorite expression for his opponents, "You’re goin’ down"

By Linda Brandelius

(This is an unfinished piece of work, more will be added later…….)

Mixed Doubles Tournament ----------- March 27-28

2009 TOURNAMENT SEASON OPENER

Our “Blind Draw Mixed Doubles” was another successful tournament and a great start into our second tournament season. Over 200 players and spectators signed in and attended the 2-day games. We were once again blessed with perfect pickleball weather.

Kathy Dillon handled the referee sign-ups and the referee game assignments. Thanks to Kathy and all the referees. Everyone did a great job.

We had a lot of fun, great competition, and everyone gained a little more tournament experience. The cheers of the enthusiastic crowd could be heard from blocks away.

As always, the food was outstanding. Thanks to Aileen Niver and Lin Filbin for the healthy snacks spread on Friday and to Kathy Dillon and her crew for the sandwich, chips and pasta luncheon on Saturday. Can it get any better than that?

Thanks to all players for their participation and for their hard fought, but always fair games. The wonderful crowd that filled the lawn seating area
made our tournament a real sports event and was very much appreciated.

And the winners were:

Silver: Don Parent & Lin Filbin
Bronze: Jim Westby & Katie Didion

Mixed Doubles Championships - November 2008

Our pickleball tournament year ended with the Mixed Doubles Club Championships. With the quality of play improving consistently, nobody seemed disappointed with the caliber of play. The applause and cheers of the 30-plus spectators on each of the 2 days rewarded the playing teams for their excellent play. The weather could not have been better for this time of the year. Mostly sunny skies, with temperatures from the high forties in the morning to the low seventies in the afternoon, made it ideal for pickleball. We could not have wished for a better tournament. Thanks again to the many volunteers that refereed and called the lines.

Aileen and Lin kept up with the great action on the court by organizing once again a delicious luncheon catered by our sponsor,Mr. Pickle Sandwich Shop, with enough food to satisfy a small army. The refreshments at the court side were much appreciated by the players and spectators alike. Thanks from all to Aileen, Lin and their crew.

The 2008 Mixed Doubles Club Champions:

“A” Bracket
Gold Medal: Cal Meissen & Linda Brandelius
Silver Medal: Helmut Koehne & Sharon Klotz
Bronze Medal: Don Parent & Kathy Dillon

“B” Bracket

LH Pickleball First Anniversary Tournament and BBQ Social

August 20, 2008

A Word from the Tournament Director.

A full year went by since the first pickleball was served in our Lincoln Hills community. We celebrated our first Club Anniversary with a surprise Team Pickleball Tournament and a delicious Tri-Tip BBQ Luncheon and Social.

For many players the tournament format was more challenging than the games, but at the end everyone survived to be able to enjoy the luncheon, the anniversary festivities and the award ceremonies. On the courts however, only four of the 8 teams survived the semi-finals. 2 "A" and 2 "B" teams fought hard for their respective trophies. The most exciting finals in our young club history drew a crowd of over 60 spectators. Thank you spectators for your enthusiasm and support.

A BIG thank you goes to Katie and Greg Didion for a delicious, truly home made tri-tip sandwich with all the trimmings and a wonderful PB-club "birthday cake".

Richard Holm did a great job collecting gifts and many gift cards from local businesses for a raffle he held following the meal. Thanks Richard and Marta for all your work.

After a short speech by the founder of our PB-club, Bill McCullough was presented a gift of appreciation and a "PB-club Founders Medal" by the club members. Thanks again Bill.

Thanks to Linda Brandelius for assembling a photo album with pictures of our first two tournaments and for reading two of her own humorous poems about the Lincoln Hills Pickleball Club and its players.

Because of the willingness of so many members to volunteer to take on the tough positions as referees, line judges and score keepers the tournament ran once again smooth. Their work was most appreciated. Thanks also to Jim and Elliott for their dedication behind the cameras, freezing some special moments for the future.

And here are the winning teams of our first team pickleball tournament:

"A" Bracket Team Winners
Katie Didion
Audrey Morse

Don Parent
Paul Walz

"B" Bracket Team Winners
Kathy Dillon
Carole Palmroth
Bob Costabile

Roger Odle

MAY 30-31 TOURNAMENT RESULTS

A word from the Tournament Director:

In its short 9 months club history, our second L-H Pickleball Club tournament was another smashing success with a much improved level of play. This may be contributed to the additional days available for pickleball play, but also to the high skill level several new members brought to the club. The stately backdrop of 40 to 60 spectators for each of the 3 sessions, First Round, Semi-Finals and Final Four Matches, was most impressive. I am sure that all players appreciated the cheering on. The cool mornings and afternoon temperatures in the mid eighties made it near perfect weather for the 2 days of Pickleball.

What would a pickleball tournament be without a wonderful luncheon buffet on the day of the finals? We may never find out because of our dedicated social committee.
A BIG THANK YOU to Aileen Niver and Lin Filbin for a great job.

Only one of the top 4 seated players on both, the women’s and men’s side, did NOT make it to the Final Four. The 5th seated woman and
man replaced them. That shows the expertise of the 12 members that participated in the pre-ranking of the players.

Now to the Final Four finishes:

Women
Champion: Marilyn Duncan
Runner-up: Linda Brandelius
Third Place: Katie Didion
Forth Place: Audrey Morse
Men
Champion: Don Parent
Runner-up: Helmut Koehne
Third Place: Scott Sutherland
Forth Place: Cal Meissen

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you players, referees, line judges, score keepers and spectators for making it a great tournament.
